What Makes a Good Website?
What's the point of having a website, if it doesn't help convert "lookers" into customers? Good web content is two-fold. It needs to be good for SEO, and it needs to cause people to want to do business with you.
Let's focus on the part that causes people to like and trust you. It's the part that can turn your website visitors into new customers. These are the words chosen, the pictures, video, headlines, the layout, etc. It's the part that will speak to the heart. It's the part that will make people feel good about your company.
Too many web builders will focus on the SEO. But ranking on the first page of a search engine doesn't matter much if people click on the site and are confused or aren't shown what they're looking for. So many websites have TOO MUCH confusing content. And many websites aren't written for PEOPLE... they're written for Google. But there has to be a happy medium there, or else you turn people off. Google doesn't make you money, new customers do. So, you can't forget to impress your visitors and allow them find what they're looking for easily. You need to answer the questions they have as soon as they get to your site. They have a problem and they're looking for a competent business to provide a solution.
Have you seen a local website with about 45 different web pages? It's all words. Words for search engines, not for people. Too much empty information. Those are websites that aren't converting many people into new customers.
If a person is looking for a new carpet cleaning company to try, and they decide to click on a Company XYZ's web link that they found at the top of Google, that's not the end. That's the beginning. What happens when they see a Home page that's full of words that means nothing to them? What happens when Company XYZ's website fails to give them good reasons to choose THEM instead of someone else? What happens when there isn't any information there to help a new visitor trust that company? They back out and click on some other company.
Do a quick 7-second "caveman test". If someone goes to your website, will they understand what you do and how you're different (why choose you instead of a competitor) within 7 seconds?
Making your website a friendly and trustworthy stop for visitors is super important. It needs to give a person confidence in your company. It needs to make them feel that you'll treat them right. It needs to reduce the risk of trying a new company they've never tried before.
Just remember the END GOAL. Turning website visitors into customers.
